NBA Player, Lorenzen Wright Murdered - Rule Homicide
More details are emerging in the mysterious death of former Atlanta Hawks player Lorenzen Wright.
According to online reports, Wright’s body was found “riddled with bullets” in a wooded area in Southeast Memphis Wednesday afternoon. According to 730 Fox Sports in Memphis, the 34-year-old was shot at least a dozen times and possibly as many as 18 times.
The street near where Wright was found was often used as a shortcut to his mother’s house not far from FedEx’s world headquarters. His mother reported him missing on July 22.
Wright’s friends questioned why police didn’t do more to investigate a 911 call from Wright’s cell phone in the early morning hours of July 19, when he was last seen alive. They wonder if police dropped the ball.
All week long police said they had no indication of foul play in Wright’s disappearance. So when did police become aware of the 911 call with sounds of multiple gunshots in the background?
The Commercial Appeal newspaper, which first reported the call, said a dispatcher in the suburb of Germantown heard a garbled male voice say an expletive and then at least 10 gunshots. The call went dead and no one answered when the dispatcher called back, the newspaper reported.
Collierville spokesman Mark Heuberger said he couldn’t comment on whether his department knew about the call. Family spokeswoman Camelle Logan, Wright’s cousin, declined comment. [link]
In the hours before his death, a woman dropped Wright off at a Memphis restaurant. Later that day he turned up unannounced at his ex-wife’s home where he checked on his six children. Wright had plans to drive his kids to an Atlanta suburb on July 19.
The 6-foot-11 Wright spent two years as a star center at Memphis before entering the NBA draft as a top 10 draft pick in 1996.
Like most young gifted athletes, Wright was lured into a professional basketball career by the promise of big money, expensive clothes, cars and women. In his 13 years with the NBA, Wright played for five NBA teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
According to the AJC: “the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported his custom-built 17-room home in Eads, Tenn., was repossessed in May for $1.3 million, and that his Atlanta house was repossessed in January for $1.1 million.”
Although he never lived up to the billing of a top 10 pick, Wright carved out a niche that enabled him to make over $55 million dollars over his NBA career, and he never hesitated to give back to his hometown.
During his first of three NBA stints in Atlanta, Wright, Penny Hardaway and two other Memphis-area NBA players (Todd Day and Elliot Perry) furnished $10,000 to Travis Butler, a 9-year-old boy who lived with his mother’s corpse for a month out of fear he would be put in foster care if anyone found out she was dead.
“To end his career and his life like this here in some woods, that’s not good,” friend Stan McKinley said. “You don’t do a dog like this. It’s just a really sad day for the city as a whole.”

Russia Elects First Black President
Jean Gregoire Sagbo is the new Obama. In Novozaavidovo, Russia a black man was elected to Russia for the first time in history. The mayor Vyacheslav Arakelov explains that Sagbo's "skin is black but he is Russian inside." As a municipal leader, Sagbo will be marking progressive move away from racism in Russia.
His goal is to aid the disenfranchised, and eradicating drug problems along with pollution in his district. Having lived in Russia for 21 years. Sagbo has been successful as a councilor so far and he has many plans in the future for the his municipality.
He wasn't the first black person to venture into politics, Joaquin Crima from Guinea-Bissau had run for a district in Russia but didn't make the cut. Crima is supposedly a liberal enough for the media to refer to as "Russia's Obama" but whatever the political grounds are for the nominee, the most salient factor of the situation seems to be the color. It seems to have little to do with where they stand on the political spectrum but the overcoming of skin color discrimination seems to be dissipating in Russia.

DMX Goes Back to Jail
(AllHipHop News) A lawyer for DMX has confirmed that the rapper surrendered to authorities in Los Angeles today (July 26th) to begin serving a three month prison sentence.
DMX appeared in a Los Angeles court, where he was sentenced to the three months, for violating the terms of his 2002 probation for a reckless driving charge.
Mr. Simmons is here today to fully cooperate with respect to any matters of the Court's concern,” DMX’s lawyer Aja M. Southern told AllHipHop.com. “This is one of many steps towards rebuilding his image and rapport with the community and his loyal fans.”
The jail sentence comes on the heels of DMX’s release from prison earlier this month, after he served four months in an Arizona jail.
In that incident, the rapper violated his probation when he tested positive for cocaine and was found guilty of other infractions, which violated his probation in another case.

Miles Davis Former Bassist Sues Rapper Snoop Dogg Over Samples
(AllHipHop News) Snoop Dogg and a number of other West Coast rappers are being sued by a legendary bassist who claims the artists illegally sampled a record and never paid him.
Michael Henderson cut his teeth touring with Stevie Wonder and recording extensively with Miles Davis, before he launched a successful solo career and released eight critically acclaimed albums.
His music has been sampled by artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, Notorious B.I.G. and others.
Lawyers for Henderson filed a lawsuit against Snoop Dogg, MC Eiht, Goldie Lo, Kam, Doggy Style Records and Universal Music on Tuesday (July 6th).
According to the lawsuit, which was filed in the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern District, Snoop and company illegally sampled “Riding,” a song on Henderson’s 1979 album Do It All.
Henderson accuses the rappers of incorporating his music into their song “Riding” and also “Hands on the Wheel,“ which were both available for stream, download and purchase.
In the complaint, Henderson claims “Flashbacks” featuring Warzone (Goldie Loc, Kam and MC Eiht) was released on a mixtape, which was used to promote Snoop’s album Ego Trippin’, which was released in March of 2008.
Henderson also says “Hands on the Wheel” illegally incorporated his music and was used to boost ticket sales for Snoop’s West Fest tour in June of 2008.
Henderson is suing for copyright infringement, unfair competition and unjust enrichment. He is seeking unspecified damages in a trial by jury.

King James moves to Miami / Hip Hop Reacts
Basketball fans around the country reacted strongly when LeBron James finally dropped the news last night that he was signing with the Miami Heat after frenzied speculation about the NBA MVP's next move. Hip-hop's basketball fans took to Twitter in droves to vent, lament and crack jokes about King James' decision.
Teflon Don Rick Ross tweeted "Miami the spotlight of the world!!!!!" which was later re-tweeted by fellow Miami MC Trina. "Pretty Boy Swag" rapper Soulja Boy Tell'em offered a simple Twitter message about the 'Bron hubbub, tweeting "Lebron James Swag." Even glitzy '90s rapper MC Hammer enthusiastically chimed in with "LeBron signs with the HEAT !!!!"
Diddy, like many New Yorkers, had been hoping James would come to Gotham and wrote on his Twitter page, "Lebron will sign with the knicks! Yea I said it!" But an hour later, the party-startin' mogul seemed at peace with 'Bron's finale choice and tweeted, "ok i can handle Miami!!! its my second home!!!! lets go!!!!!!" Queens MC Q-Tip approved of James' choice and typed on Friday (July 9), "I think @kingjames made the right decision."
Rumors had been swirling that James would possibly go to a Chicago, New York or New Jersey team, so not everyone was geeked about 'Bron heading down south. "Miami???!!!! nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" ?uestlove of the Roots said in an impassioned tweet.
Some MCs offered their sympathies to fans of James' former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. D.C. Ludacris offered something a little stronger for Cavs fans, tweeting, "Conjure [cognac] is on deck in Cleveland just in case anybody feel like gettin f---ed up tonight."
