Today marks what would have been his 37th birthday. Known as Jay Dee, Dilla Dawg, and James to others, Producer and Hip-Hop artist J Dilla laid tracks that have allowed positive rap artists to fully express themselves since the mid 90s. His life’s soundtracks feature organic instruments tastefully blended with old school cuts that immediately get the dance floor crunk and have helped define the styles of artists like Busta Rhymes, Common, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and his own group Slum Village.
We lost his incredible talent just three days after his birthday in 2006 and in memory of his vision; producer Brian “B” Kyle of Atkin’s Gifted Films releases a full documentary entitled Still Shining that recounts Dilla’s career for his fans; old and new. The film shows family and friends remembering him in a film that should remind us to have no limits in fulfilling our goals. Take a look at the documentary below and share your favorite Dilla cut/memory in the comment section and learn more about Dilla’s legacy HERE. Rest In Peace King.
