A brief history lesson on Jackie Robinson reveals that he was much more than the first African-American major league baseball player. The overachieving hall of famer had many pursuits outside of baseball, including pioneering roles in business and sports analysis. Last night (March 7) in New York City at the Jackie Robinson Foundation Annual Awards Dinner, three honorees were recognized for their respective contributions to society.

This award is given to individuals who have provided charitable and philanthropic works and also excelling in the realms of music and fashion. The award also recognizes achievements and strides made in the world of finance. The third honoree was Senior Vice President of The Coca-Cola Company Ingrid Saunders Jones who won the “Robie” Humanitarian award for her work with charity and notable community initiatives.

Held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, the event was hosted by the iconic entertainer Bill Cosby and was a star-studded affair that also featured a speech from New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. Def Jam Founder Russell Simmons, Reverend Dr. Calvin Butts and investment banking executive Ray McGuire were the presenters of the awards. R&B songstress Chrisette Michelle delighted the attendees with a special musical performance as well.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation, founded by Mr. Robinson’s wife Rachel, is a not-for-profit organization that focuses its efforts on providing higher education opportunities for underserved communities and also serves as the hub in preserving the legacy of Jackie Robinson’s famed career and achievements.
